Garage Door Gallery

GARAGE DOOR GALLERY MISSION

Born to Utilitarian, Appalachian parents I learned at a very early age to think of things in terms of usability and re-usability . . . and that’s why my art incorporates the unconventional, why I love to thrift, and why I strive to live and eat healthy. I have a need and love for the land and old, abandoned things because I find them lovely and full of usefulness and stories. There’s something character-rich about the look and feel of rusted metal, broken glass, peeling paint . . . and harvest time. As my parents and I age I find myself even more enamored with renewal and the fading of things . . . like my 1960’s era garage located off the alley behind my 1890’s home in Tremont. Transforming the garage into a gallery felt like a natural development. So without too much trouble — emptied, cleaned, painted, some inexpensive illumination added — it will be reborn as an independently run artist exhibition space. The gallery will be dedicated to showing the art of Gallery Ü Haul, whimsical rubbish, story telling and interactive, live art - I will be conducting digitally recorded interviews that will be shown at future Arts in the Alley events!

When the door is up enjoy libations, finger food, musical guests, and great art - it happens on the second Saturday of each month and it's never the same twice.

LETS TALK TRASH!
Anyone have any stories about finding junk or trash? Tell me about something you found that turned out to be something great. Or a find that you turned into something else. Did you find trash that you turned into cash or some junk that you turned into art? Examples: trash made into jewelry, sculpture, etc.; finds at antique malls, flea markets; vintage or antique items you've purchased; how you incorporate it into your home; photography artwork made from your finds - I will be conducting digitally recorded interviews that will be shown at future Arts in the Alley events!

Decks of personality identification playing cards from the war in Iraq are a recent example.)

Garage Sale/Swapcycle/Barter Market
Imagine a flea market where you can swap, barter or get things for free! Swapcycle Market allows you to exchange goods or services with another user. You can choose to accept or decline any offer. Swap something you DON’T want for something you DO! It’s FUN, it’s ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, and best of all . . . NO CREDIT CARD REQUIRED!

The idea behind the Swapcycle Market is to build community through a barter economy. With more and more people loosing their jobs and homes to foreclosure it’s a struggle to make ends meet. We all have unwanted yet usable or desirable items that we no longer need or want so why not recycle the items with others rather than a dump? Don’t spend time, energy and money you don’t have trying to get what u need, instead check out what friends, neighbors and members of the community have to barter, sell or want to give away!

Some ideas:
Food, clothing, seeds/bulbs/plants, sports equipment, materials such as lumber, aluminum or steel, appliances, board games, books, haircuts, graphic design/web design services, bicycle repair, auto repair, tools, tapes/CDs/DVDs, tarot card/palm/astrological/I-Ching readings, paintings, drawings, art supplies, jewelry, crafts, toys, dance or music lessons, musical or theatrical performances — anything you can think of to swap, barter or give for free!
